Participated in six Nation Building Exercises, became the Battalion S1 (Personnel/Administration) Officer and served as Special Projects Officer for JFK Center Commander, BG Henry Emerson.
Rotary Wing Aviator and Command Pilot, 1st Aviation Brigade, Camp Holloway, Viet Nam. As a Rotary Wing Aviator and member of the 57th Assault Helicopter Company, I supported Special Forces operations in the Republic of Viet Nam and later in my career trained many of the MH-6 helicopter pilots of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment at Fort Campbell, KY.
Protocol Officer, Brigade S1, Flight Training Team Chief, Fort Rucker, Alabama. Was Department of the Army selected to become the 1st Aviation Brigade S1 as a Captain (Brigade staff officers are normally Majors or above). After 18 Months, was reassigned as a Department of Flight Training Team Chief responsible for rewriting the Aviation Training Program of Instruction (POI) to facilitate the transition of all basic flight training from Hughes TH-55 aircraft to Bell OH-58 aircraft.
Infantry Company Commander, Infantry Battalion Operations Officer, Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Commanded an Infantry Basic Training Company for 36 months. Was rated as one of the three best Company Commanders on Fort Jackson. Served as a Battalion Operations Officer for an additional 24 months. Developed programs to increase trainee interest in training success and thereby reduced the Battalion’s discharge rate to the lowest on Fort Jackson.
Flight Evaluation Team Chief, Fort Rucker, Alabama. Served as the Team Chief of the Army Aviation Center Training and Evaluation Team whose mission was to evaluate flight training standards retention throughout the Army, report the level of retention to the Commander, Fort Rucker (a Major General), and recommend changes to flight training to increase the retention of school taught standard flight maneuvers.
Commander, Dedicated Battalion Advisory Team 206th Infantry Scout Group (AK, ARNG), 3rd Battalion, Kotzebue, Alaska. Isolated tour 200 miles North of the Arctic Circle. Assisted the Battalion Commander in leading the Battalion to successfully completing all annual inspections and completing annual training exercises with no deficiencies.
Recruiting Battalion Executive Officer, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Led Battalion staff composed of both military and civilian personnel and was recognized by Chief of Personnel, Fort McPherson, Georgia for my leadership of the civilian staff.
Command and General Staff College, Class Director Staff, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Served as the Operations Officer for the US students attending Command and General Staff College. Coordinated Field Training Exercises and Staff Rides. Was singled out by the Command and General Staff Class Director as the “most productive staff officer I’ve ever met.”
US Army Space Study Group, Executive Officer, US Army Science Board, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Was selected as one of only 30 officers to serve on the first US Army Space Initiatives Study Group whose mission was to develop the US Army’s Space Development Plan for the years 1985-2025. Served as the Executive Officer to the Group and was the primary Personnel Policy Developer responsible for developing requirements and policy for assigning Army personnel to Space related assignments. Was recognized by the Army Chief of Staff for my contribution.
Command and General Staff College, Class Director Staff, Operations Officer Allied Officer Preparatory Course, VCSA Staff, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Responsible for pre-training and extra training activities, and general welfare of all Foreign Students attending Command and General Staff College. Responsible for organizing and conducting Induction Ceremonies for the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army’s Allied Officer Hall of Fame Located at the Command and General Staff College.
Personnel Policy Integrator, Accessions Branch Chief, Program Manager for the Montgomery GI Bill (Active Component and Reserve Components), Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, The Pentagon, Washington, DC. Was a Personnel Policy Integrator for the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel (Now called the G1) of the Army. Served as an Operations Officer in the Army Emergency Operations Center (Pentagon) during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and became familiar with Black Ops in extreme environments. As Program Manager for the Montgomery GI Bill 1987-1993, briefed the President and worked with members of his staff, members of Congress (especially Representative Sonny Montgomery and Representative John Murtha and members of the House Reserve Affairs Staff), General Officers of all branches of service (Army Staff and Joint Staff), and the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Reserve Affairs routinely in the conduct of my duties. Also supported and frequently worked directly with Secretary of the Army Special Assistants such as Honorable John O. Marsh, and Under Secretary of the Army, James Ambrose on personnel related studies.
