Principal Cyber Engineer

Job Description:

The Principal Cyber Engineer is primarily a technical and a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for cyber development. This Engineer understands the capture process and lifecycle of the development of technical cyber efforts.  Execution of these responsibilities will require the ability to create solutions by synthesizing creative support, mission strategy, industry standards, processes, and technology to achieve the program objectives.

The successful applicant will join a multi-discipline distributed team and integrate existing products, industry architecture methods and emerging technologies to solve our customers’ complex IT/cyber challenges.

Primary Responsibilities

The Principal Cyber Engineer will provide cyber management services government agencies related to threats in Cyberspace Operations. You will also manage cyber development projects with Agile Software Development methodology to balance user requirements with technical realities. This position may provide customized training and documentation for software products.  This position plans and facilitates exercises focused on Cyberspace Operations in support of military operations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide oversite of projects and analyze system security to identify and mitigate risks
  • Assist in identifying, prioritizing, and coordinating the development of critical cybersecurity procedures and key resources
  • Provide guidance and manage testing of existing software development and new technologies
  • Routinely provide guidance to and assists in the training of less experienced staff


  • Must have a Top Secret Clearance with SCI Eligibility (SSBI within the last 5 years)
  • Must have experience related to Cyber Security Engineering
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, including negotiations experience
  • Strong technical background with ability to continually evaluate the needs of new and emerging technologies
  • Working knowledge of industry best practices in IT/cyber security

Desired Skills:

  • Cyberspace Operations experience / fusion centers experience desirable
  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent years of experience, in computer science, engineering or related discipline
  • Cyberspace Operations Operator Course graduate desired
  • Cloud Computing (e.g. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google)
  • Diverse Operating Systems (Microsoft Windows, Linux, RHEL, etc.)
  • Wireless Networking Experience
  • Platforms: Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Cisco IOS.
  • Networking: TCP/IP, Switching, Routing, Firewall, VPN.
  • Tools: Antivirus Utilities, Wireshark, Metasploit, Nessus vulnerability scanner, Splunk, Microsoft Office, VMware ESXi and Workstation, PGP.

Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to, experience in supporting large projects related to the individuals’ subject matter expertise.  These senior personnel are experts in either functional domains (e.g., finance, personnel, acquisition, etc.) with many years of experience.  They will have some experience as leaders and Project Managers.  Subject Matter Experts prepare and deliver presentations to colleagues, subordinates, and government representatives.  Assures the proper use of current or requested programming, testing and documentation techniques.  They produce and/or review substantive and/or complex documentation reflecting detailed knowledge of areas as identified in the statement of work.  

Ph.D. in Business, Engineering, Management Sciences, Computer Science, Information Systems, Social Science, Education, Human Resources Development, and Psychology or other related analytical, scientific, or technical disciplines or other related discipline and 8-9 years of progressive experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience), or a master’s degree and ten to twelve years’ experience, or a bachelor degree and twelve to fifteen years’ experience.

  1. Possess a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) Security Clearance and a valid state driver’s license.
  2. A minimum of 5 years’ experience with SOF and Joint Intelligence Preparation of the Operating Environment
  3. Proficient knowledge of the doctrine and application or utilization of Special Operations Forces (SOF) in various environments. Expertise gained as a military SOF member or civilian capacity in a special operations command is preferred.
  4. Proficient knowledge of SOF and NSW doctrine, missions, capabilities and Mission Essential Task Lists (METLs) to analyze Special Operations major issues, objectives and planning processes with outcomes intended for Flag Officer/General Officer level joint standards.
  5. Proficient knowledge developing target level intelligence materials, reporting, and other materials directly supporting the development of SOF missions, mission concepts and concepts of operations.
  6. Working knowledge to evaluate critical and strategically important targets for target selection, target engagement, and mission planning.
  7. Working knowledge of NSW mission areas related to Surveillance and Reconnaissance, hydrographic reconnaissance, Direct Action, Military Information Support Operations, military operational planning and campaign design.
  8. Working knowledge and familiarity with SOF operating systems and equipment.
  9. Proficiency with common/standard business software programs including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  10. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others, both verbally and in writing.
  11. Enter data into multiple databases accurately.
